Spotify Launches Studio App to Rival Google’s NotebookLM
Spotify is expanding its footprint in the generative AI space with the launch of “Studio by Spotify Labs,” a standalone desktop application designed to transform personal data and web content into custom audio briefings.

The new software positions the company as a direct competitor to Google’s NotebookLM, which gained traction by allowing users to create podcast-style audio summaries from specific source documents. Studio by Spotify Labs goes a step further by integrating an AI agent capable of browsing the web and syncing with a user’s personal digital ecosystem.
Personalized Audio Briefings
By connecting services such as email, calendars, and document storage, the app generates tailored podcasts based on a user’s unique schedule and interests. Users can input complex, multistep prompts to organize their day or plan travel, such as:
- Requesting an audio rundown of a daily itinerary based on calendar bookings.
- Asking for local dinner recommendations near upcoming travel destinations.
- Generating custom podcast suggestions specifically curated for long commutes.
All generated audio content is stored privately within the user’s Spotify library and syncs across devices, ensuring these briefings remain for personal consumption rather than public distribution.
Market Availability and Limitations
Spotify is currently rolling out the tool as a research preview across more than 20 markets. Access is restricted to users aged 18 and older. The company has issued a disclaimer regarding the early nature of the technology, noting that the AI may occasionally produce unreliable or inaccurate information.
This desktop release follows Spotify’s recent introduction of a command-line interface, which previously allowed developers using tools like Claude Code or Codex to generate personal podcasts. The Studio app now democratizes this capability for non-technical users.
Strategic Audio Expansion
The move signals Spotify’s ambition to become the central hub for all audio-related tasks. Analysts suggest the platform could eventually evolve into a comprehensive system for capturing and summarizing meetings, similar to established notetaking startups like Granola or Rewind, by leveraging system audio integration.
The rise of the “AI-generated podcast” format has seen rapid adoption across the industry, with companies like Adobe and ElevenLabs, as well as apps like Hero and Huxe, increasingly integrating similar features to turn text-heavy information into digestible audio experiences.
