Spotify Updates Lyrics With Offline Access and Translations
Spotify is rolling out a significant update to its lyrics feature, introducing offline access for Premium subscribers and expanding translation support to a global audience. These changes, announced Wednesday, aim to improve how listeners interact with song text across the platform’s mobile and tablet applications.
The update arrives as the company continues to refine its strategy regarding the lyrics experience. While previous attempts to restrict access to the feature behind a paywall in 2024 faced backlash, the streamer is now positioning the new offline capabilities as an exclusive benefit for Premium members to drive subscription growth.

New Interface and Global Features
Beyond offline access, Spotify is reconfiguring the app interface to make lyrics more prominent. Users will now find lyrics placed directly beneath the album artwork or the short looping video canvases that accompany tracks. Data from user testing indicated that this change significantly boosts engagement with the feature.
Key updates in the rollout include:
- Global Translation Support: Expanding from the limited 25 markets supported last year, translations are now available worldwide.
- Automatic Localization: When tapping the translate icon on the lyrics card, the text will automatically default to the language set on the user’s device.
- Social Sharing: The ability to share specific lyric snippets to social media via the “Now Playing” view remains intact.
- Platform Availability: These features are deploying to all users, both free and paid, on iOS and Android devices.
A History of Lyric Development
The path to these features has been long for Spotify, which historically faced complex licensing hurdles. After years of relying on the “Behind the Lyrics” partnership with Genius—which provided trivia alongside partial text—the company finally launched real-time, full-track lyrics globally in 2021.
This latest update represents another step in the streamer’s efforts to keep users within its ecosystem by offering more than just audio, ensuring that the lyrics experience remains competitive with other platforms.
