Amazon Launches Alexa+ for All US Customers

Amazon has officially rolled out Alexa+, its advanced generative AI-powered upgrade to the classic Alexa assistant, to all users across the United States. The release marks a significant shift in how the company positions its voice-activated technology, moving from simple command execution to a more conversational, agentic AI experience.

For Amazon Prime members, the new AI capabilities are included at no extra cost across their devices. Those without a Prime subscription can also access the service via the Alexa mobile app or the official website, though these sessions will be subject to specific usage limits designed to prevent system abuse.

A New Tier of Interaction

Daniel Rausch, VP of Alexa and Echo at Amazon, described the rollout as a major milestone, noting that the company has already seen tens of millions of users interacting with the upgraded model during its testing phase. “Prime members enjoy unlimited access — it’s basically a paid-tier level of access that we’re including in Prime now,” Rausch stated.

The platform is designed to be model-agnostic, leveraging both Amazon’s proprietary foundation models and external AI technology to select the best tool for any given request. This allows the assistant to handle tasks that go beyond traditional smart home controls, including:

  • Planning complex travel itineraries.
  • Updating shared digital calendars.
  • Curating and saving recipes to a personal library.
  • Providing movie recommendations and homework assistance.
  • Executing autonomous “agentic” tasks via integrations with services like Uber, OpenTable, Ticketmaster, and Yelp.

Refining the Experience

During the year-long beta period, Amazon gathered significant user feedback to address common pain points. Early testers reported frustrations with the assistant being overly talkative or interrupting conversations. In response, Amazon implemented several adjustments, including a “Is that for me?” verification check when the AI is uncertain about the target of a command.

The company also addressed preferences for the assistant’s voice. While a new AI-enhanced voice is standard, users can revert to the classic “OG” voice, which now benefits from AI-driven inflection to sound more natural. Currently, users still have the option to roll back to the original Alexa experience, though Amazon has not committed to keeping this legacy option available indefinitely.

Engagement Metrics

Internal data from the beta period indicates strong user adoption. Amazon reports that music streaming commands increased by 25% among those using the upgraded assistant, and engagement with recipe features saw a 5x increase. Overall, users are engaging in two to three times more conversational exchanges with Alexa+ compared to the previous version.

For those outside the Prime ecosystem, standalone access to Alexa+ is priced at $19.99 per month. The service is now available across the Echo product line, Fire TV, and Alexa-enabled hardware from partners including Bose and Samsung.
