Status AI Raises $17M to Transform Social Media Into Games

Status AI, a platform designed to shift social media from passive scrolling to active, immersive storytelling, has officially secured $17 million in combined seed and Series A funding. The investment round includes backing from major firms such as Abstract, General Catalyst, Union Square Ventures, Y Combinator, and LightShed Partners.

Forget the feed: Status AI raises $17M to turn social media into interactive entertainment

The company, which emerged from stealth last year, was founded by Fai Nur, Amit Bhatnagar, and Pritesh Kadiwala. Driven by the goal of moving beyond the traditional feed-based social experience, the founders are betting that the next wave of consumer social media will prioritize interactive entertainment over static content consumption.

From Chatbots to Immersive Worlds

According to CEO Fai Nur, the inspiration for the platform stemmed from her own experiences as a “chronically online” teenager. She identified a gap in the market for users who wanted to do more than just discuss their favorite fictional universes—they wanted to inhabit them. Unlike early AI-driven social apps focused primarily on chatbot interactions, Status AI aims to provide a gamified environment.

“AI could finally let any user actually simulate any character, not just watch or talk about their favorite worlds, but live inside them,” Nur explained. Within the app, users can create personas and navigate social landscapes where they might run for president, achieve internet celebrity status, or step directly into narratives from books and television shows.

Platform Engagement and Growth

The environment on Status AI is entirely user-generated, with settings and character arcs evolving through player interaction. Key metrics shared by the company highlight early traction in this space:

  • Over 13 million user-generated worlds created.
  • More than 5 million character profiles established.
  • Strong initial adoption among young women, a demographic Nur identifies as a key driver of digital culture.

The platform offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing users to connect with friends while building their own narratives. Nur noted that the team is already seeing interest from streamers and media studios, who view the app as a potential tool for audience development before larger theatrical or arena-based activations.

A Shift in Digital Entertainment

Investors are increasingly focused on the transition toward platforms that prioritize “multiplayer environments” where users can build and belong. Rich Greenfield, a partner at LightShed and an investor in the company, noted that media entities are actively seeking new ways to invite consumers into their proprietary worlds and character ecosystems.

With the new capital, Status AI plans to scale its infrastructure to support this growth. The founders argue that by combining AI-driven dynamics with brand-safe, interactive storytelling, they are defining a new category of “immersive social entertainment” that moves past the limitations of traditional social networking.
