Threads Expands Communities and Tests New User Badges

Meta is scaling up its presence in the social space by doubling the number of available communities on Threads. Announced this Monday, the update brings the platform’s total to more than 200 specialized groups, marking a significant push to capture audiences currently active on platforms like X and Reddit.

The expansion follows an initial rollout in October, which featured roughly 100 communities focused on broad interests such as K-pop, basketball, literature, and television. The new additions lean heavily into niche fan bases, introducing dedicated spaces for specific professional sports teams, including the Lakers, Knicks, and Spurs.

New Tools for User Recognition

Beyond increasing the variety of topics, Meta is experimenting with engagement-focused features designed to personalize the user experience:

  • Customizable Flair: Users can now add specific labels beneath their usernames. For example, in sports-themed groups, members can display their favorite team, while in book communities, authors can identify their profession.
  • Champion Badges: The platform is testing a “Champion” badge to highlight highly active participants. This is currently limited to a select group of users who maintain high follower counts within a community and contribute frequently to ongoing conversations.

Strategic Growth and Retention

Threads continues to refine its feature set to bolster user retention, building on recent additions such as group chats, direct messaging, and ephemeral post options. As the platform faces stiff competition from X and emerging rivals like Bluesky, its growth metrics remain a focal point.

As of August, the social network hit the 400-million-user milestone, just two years following its initial launch. Meta also reported this fall that daily traffic to the platform has exceeded 150 million visitors, underscoring the importance of these community-driven updates in maintaining momentum.
