Truecaller Enters eSIM Market to Diversify Revenue Streams

Truecaller is expanding its service portfolio by launching an eSIM offering tailored for international travelers. The move represents a strategic pivot for the caller identification company, which seeks to stabilize its financial performance as advertising income faces significant downward pressure.

Service Scope and Global Availability

The new eSIM product provides flexible data packages ranging from 1 GB over a 7-day period up to 20 GB for a 30-day duration. At launch, the service is accessible in 29 countries, including major markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, and South Africa.

Notably absent from the initial rollout is India, the company’s largest market. The exclusion is widely attributed to stringent local telecommunications regulations. Indian authorities have previously taken firm action against similar services, including blocking Airalo and Holafly due to concerns regarding potential fraudulent activity.

Infrastructure and Competitive Strategy

To power its new platform, Truecaller has partnered with global cellular connectivity provider Telna and telecom software specialist Telness Tech. By integrating these services directly into its existing application, the company aims to leverage its massive user base of over 500 million monthly active users to gain a competitive edge over established travel eSIM providers like Saily, Roamless, and Airalo.

“The starting point is different from other players in the category. They have had to build their audiences from zero. We are offering travel eSIM inside our app that over 500 million people already use and trust every month,” stated Truecaller COO Fredrik Kjell. He added that the company’s long-standing relationship with its user base fundamentally alters its approach to distribution and pricing.

Financial Context and Market Trends

The launch arrives at a challenging period for the firm. In its Q1 2026 report, Truecaller disclosed a 27% decline in net sales, totaling 362 million SEK ($39.34 million), with ad revenue plummeting by 44%. The company recently reduced its workforce by 70 positions across various departments.

Beyond the new eSIM venture, Truecaller is prioritizing subscription-based features, such as its AI Assistant and Family Protection tools, to build more reliable income streams. The company enters a booming sector that has seen significant investor interest over the past year, with startups including Airalo, Roamless, Kolet, eSIMo, and Truley securing substantial funding rounds.
