Truecaller Faces Growth Stagnation Amid Shifting Mobile Tech

Truecaller, the global platform for caller identification with over 500 million users, is navigating a pivotal transition. After years of rapid expansion, the company is encountering a deceleration in user growth as market dynamics evolve, driven by increased competition from telecom operators and deeper integration of security tools within smartphone operating systems.

India remains the company’s stronghold, hosting over 350 million users. However, growth figures indicate a shift. Sensor Tower data reveals that downloads in India dropped 16% year-over-year in 2025, with global downloads experiencing a 5% decline. Annual download figures, which peaked at 175 million in 2021, have stabilized around 120 million, according to Appfigures.

Advertising Headwinds and Strategic Adjustments

While industry analysts look closely at the impact of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) — a network-level caller ID initiative — the immediate pressure on Truecaller’s bottom line originates from its advertising segment. Bharath Nagaraj, director of equity research at Cantor Fitzgerald, notes that ad revenue accounts for 65%-70% of the company’s earnings and has faced recent volatility.

In August 2025, the company reported a loss of roughly one-third of ad traffic from its primary partner, identified by analysts as Google. CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala attributed this to an “algorithm issue,” prompting the firm to diversify by building an in-house ad exchange and seeking new partnerships to mitigate reliance on a single platform.

Revenue Diversification and Future Outlook

Despite the slowdown in new user acquisitions, Truecaller is seeing success in other business segments:

  • In-App Revenue: Gross revenue from in-app purchases has climbed from $600,000 in 2017 to $39.3 million in 2025, with monthly figures consistently exceeding $2 million.
  • Enterprise Services: “Truecaller for Business” reported a 39% revenue increase in 2025, as more companies adopt verified identity tools for customer communication.
  • Subscriptions: The platform now counts over 4 million paid subscribers who utilize premium features such as AI-driven call screening and ad-free experiences.

Jhunjhunwala remains optimistic, emphasizing that Truecaller offers a “richer and dynamic intelligence layer” compared to basic carrier-provided caller ID. As the company expands into higher-value markets like iOS and scales its enterprise tools, the core challenge remains balancing its vast database of identities with evolving privacy regulations and the increasing integration of spam-blocking capabilities by Apple and Google.
