CONTEUDO:

Amazon has fundamentally overhauled its podcasting operations over the last six months, moving away from a traditional studio model toward an aggressive, commerce-first approach. The shift involves a significant restructuring of Wondery, the podcast studio acquired by the tech giant.

Amazon’s new podcast strategy: Monetize everything

In August 2025, the company cut more than 100 positions from Wondery. While Amazon maintained at the time that the brand would continue to exist, the internal reality has shifted toward a more lean, profit-oriented structure. Audio-only productions have been migrated under the Audible division, while the core studio focus has pivoted toward a new department identified as Creator Services.

Merging Content with Retail

The new Creator Services unit is designed to bridge the gap between media consumption and consumer spending. By partnering with high-profile celebrities, the company aims to embed shopping opportunities directly into the fan experience. Key figures currently involved in this strategy include:

  • Dax Shepard
  • Keke Palmer
  • Jason and Travis Kelce

The transition is most visible in the strategy surrounding the Kelce brothers’ show, “New Heights.” Amazon is building an “expanding universe” around the podcast that extends beyond traditional advertising revenue. Through the Kelce Clubhouse portal, fans can access a variety of integrated services, such as:

  • Purchasing official “New Heights” merchandise.
  • Streaming the “Kelce” documentary.
  • Buying curated products for football-themed events.

A Aggressive Corporate Pivot

Matt Sandler, general manager of Creator Services, described the objective as an attempt to “infuse both the content and the commerce together.” While other platforms and creators are experimenting with similar monetization models, industry observers note that Amazon’s path to this integration was unique.

The company effectively dismantled its existing studio infrastructure to prioritize this retail-centric model. By leveraging its massive e-commerce ecosystem, Amazon is betting that the future of podcasting lies not just in audio, but in the ability to convert listeners into shoppers directly within the platform’s interface.
