Wikipedia Traffic Drops as AI and Social Video Rise

The Wikimedia Foundation has identified a notable shift in how users access the world’s largest online encyclopedia. According to Marshall Miller of the foundation, human page views on Wikipedia have declined by 8% year-over-year, marking a departure from the platform’s long-standing role as the primary destination for web-based knowledge.

Wikipedia says traffic is falling due to AI search summaries and social video

This trend became apparent following an upgrade to the site’s bot-detection systems. The foundation discovered that a surge in traffic observed between May and June was largely driven by sophisticated bots designed to bypass existing security measures, masking a genuine decrease in human engagement over recent months.

The Impact of AI and Social Media

Miller points to two primary drivers behind this cooling of traffic:

  • Generative AI in Search: Search engines are increasingly surfacing direct answers through AI-generated summaries, reducing the necessity for users to click through to original sources like Wikipedia.
  • Shift to Social Video: Younger generations are pivoting away from the open web to retrieve information through social video platforms.

While Google has publicly disputed the notion that AI summaries inherently diminish traffic, the Wikimedia Foundation remains concerned about the long-term sustainability of its model. The organization notes that fewer direct visits can lead to a decline in the number of volunteers who contribute to content, as well as a potential drop in individual donations.

Preserving the Human Element

Despite the challenges, the foundation emphasizes that the encyclopedia’s role remains vital, even if its reach is being mediated by other technologies. Miller argues that companies leveraging Wikipedia’s data have a responsibility to drive traffic back to the source to ensure the ecosystem remains healthy. Recently, an incident at a Wikipedia editors’ conference—where a volunteer reportedly disarmed a gunman—highlighted the dedication of the community behind the site.

To combat the decline, the Wikimedia Foundation is currently:

  • Developing a new framework to ensure proper attribution of content.
  • Deploying two dedicated teams focused on expanding the encyclopedia’s reach to new audiences.
  • Calling for volunteers to assist in broader efforts to maintain content integrity.

Miller encourages internet users to remain intentional about their search habits. He suggests that by actively clicking through to original sources and prioritizing human-curated knowledge, users can help sustain the infrastructure that supports generative AI and digital information at large.
