X has officially launched a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, streamlining the process for AI assistants to integrate directly with the platform’s data. This move allows applications such as Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build to interact with X’s API using individual user account permissions.
Simplifying AI Connectivity
The Model Context Protocol acts as an open standard, creating a universal language for AI models to interface with external services. Previously, developers aiming to connect assistants like Claude or Cursor to X faced a heavy technical burden: they were required to build, host, and maintain their own MCP servers while managing complex authentication protocols.
By providing a hosted solution, X effectively removes these infrastructure hurdles. Developers can now bypass the manual integration work, allowing them to focus on core product development rather than backend maintenance. This strategy aligns X with other major platforms that have adopted the protocol, including GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce.
Data Access and Security Constraints
While the new server makes it easier to retrieve and analyze real-time data, it does not introduce new capabilities to the existing API. X is intentionally positioning itself as a repository of live information rather than just a social network. However, the company has implemented clear guardrails to prevent abuse.

- Cost Barriers: To further deter misuse, X recently adjusted its API pricing, with link posting costs reaching $0.20 and general post publishing at $0.015.
These measures follow earlier updates to API v2, which were specifically designed to combat automated, AI-generated replies. By combining these restrictions with the new hosted MCP, X aims to encourage useful data retrieval while maintaining strict control over platform activity.
