Google unveils ‘Create My Widget’ for custom Android tools
Android users will soon gain the ability to generate personalized home screen widgets using natural language, as Google introduces its new “Create My Widget” functionality. The tool is scheduled to roll out this summer, with an initial launch targeting the latest Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices.
The system leverages Gemini to translate user requests into functional, resizable dashboards. Rather than relying on pre-built options, individuals can define specific parameters for the information they want to monitor directly on their devices.
Personalized data dashboards
The utility of the feature lies in its ability to synthesize both personal data and real-time information. According to Google, use cases include:
- Niche tracking: Cyclists can build a weather widget filtered strictly for rain and wind speed metrics.
- Routine management: Users can request automatic updates, such as a weekly display of high-protein meal prep recipes.
- Event planning: By pulling data from Gmail and Calendar, the AI can aggregate flight times, hotel bookings, and restaurant reservations into a single countdown dashboard for trips.
Deepening AI integration
Ben Greenwood, director of PM for Android Core Experiences, described the feature as a way to provide persistent access to information. “This is like you asking your personal assistant a question, and having them just bring you the answer on repeat,” Greenwood explained during a press briefing.
The rollout of “Create My Widget” coincides with the debut of Gemini Intelligence, a broader initiative from Google to integrate generative AI into the mobile ecosystem. Future updates under this umbrella will include advanced autofill capabilities and AI-enhanced voice dictation for Gboard.
