MacBook Neo is Apple’s Most Repairable Laptop in 14 Years
The newly released MacBook Neo has achieved a significant milestone for Apple hardware, earning the title of the most repairable MacBook in over a decade. According to an extensive teardown conducted by iFixit, the device marks the company’s most accessible internal design since 2011.

A Shift Away from Adhesive
The primary highlight of this redesign is the battery assembly. For years, Apple has relied heavily on strong adhesives to secure internal components, making battery replacements notoriously difficult for independent technicians and users alike. The MacBook Neo abandons this practice, utilizing a tray secured by 18 screws.
While the high screw count is notable, iFixit emphasized that “screws still beat adhesive every time.” This structural change allows for a much more straightforward removal process, a design choice that the iFixit team noted was met with genuine enthusiasm during their evaluation.
Key Improvements in Internal Design
Beyond the battery, the teardown identified several other architectural shifts that contribute to the device’s improved score:
- Modular Ports: The inclusion of modular components makes individual port repairs more feasible.
- Streamlined Disassembly: A flatter, more logical internal layout replaces the complex, stacked configurations seen in recent years.
- Repair Assistant Compatibility: The device software appears to accept replacement parts more readily, reducing the friction typically associated with the company’s “parts pairing” restrictions.
- Accessible Display and Keyboard: These frequently failing parts have been redesigned for easier extraction and replacement.
The Limits of Repairability
Despite these improvements, the MacBook Neo is not fully modular. iFixit awarded the machine a 6 out of 10 score for repairability, citing significant hurdles that remain. Specifically, the RAM and storage modules remain soldered directly to the logic board, rendering them impossible for users to upgrade after purchase.
“The parts that fail first are easier to reach than they have been on any MacBook in a long time,” the report noted. However, the inability to expand memory or storage keeps the device from reaching higher marks on the repairability scale.
Contextualizing Apple’s Design Evolution
This development follows a long history of friction between Apple and the Right to Repair movement. The company’s 2012 transition to the Retina Display MacBook Pro marked a turning point where adhesive-heavy designs and proprietary components effectively discouraged independent maintenance. That specific model earned a dismal 1 out of 10 score from iFixit at the time.
In recent years, mounting regulatory pressure and Right to Repair legislation in regions like Oregon have forced a change in strategy. Apple has gradually begun to lift restrictions on using third-party components, moving away from the strict parts pairing barriers that previously limited consumer choice.
