Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki Frustrated in Child Safety Interview

Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki faced a tense exchange during an appearance on The New York Times’ Hard Fork podcast this week. While the executive originally intended to discuss the platform’s broad ecosystem and new features, the conversation repeatedly pivoted to concerns over child safety, leading to visible irritation from the CEO.

Roblox CEO interview gets heated over child safety

The interview initially centered on Roblox’s upcoming requirement for users to submit a face scan to access messaging tools. However, the tone shifted when hosts pressed Baszucki on a report alleging that the company has historically prioritized rapid user growth over the protection of its younger audience.

Tension Over Safety Protocols

Baszucki’s frustration became apparent as the line of questioning persisted. When confronted with the growth-versus-safety narrative, the CEO remarked, “Fun. Let’s keep going down this,” signaling his desire to move away from the topic.

The interview included several friction points, particularly regarding the role of artificial intelligence in moderating user interactions:

  • Co-host Kevin Roose suggested that enhancing AI models is a primary path for Roblox to improve its safety standards.
  • Baszucki responded to the suggestion with a curt, “Good, so you’re aligning with what we did. High-five.”

Toward the end of the segment, Baszucki expressed his disappointment with the narrow focus of the discussion. He stated that he had joined the podcast with the expectation of a wide-ranging conversation about the platform’s future rather than a deep dive into regulatory and safety concerns.

“I came here because I love your podcast and came to talk about everything,” Baszucki said. “So if our PR people said, ‘Let’s talk about age-gating for an hour,’ I’m up for it, but I love your pod. I thought I came here to talk about everything.”
